ADAPTABLE SANCTUARIES FOR FLORENCE TRAIN STATION | Refugees are among the most marginalized users of European train stations, many of which have Christian chapels but not other houses of worship.  This hybrid drawing envisions a cluster of rotating, interfaith ‘pods’ suspended above the platform at Florence’s Santa Maria Novella train station.  Drawn in both plan and section at different scales, the pods would provide fleeting, adaptable sanctuaries for travellers of all religions, as well as ‘prayer kits’ for a variety of religions.

THE HIGHWAY CHURCH | Florence’s ‘highway church,’ designed by modernist architect Giovanni Michelucci, has no parish. The church’s mission is to give sanctuary to travellers on a major highway. This collaged hybrid drawing analyzes the church’s unique ceilings.

THE TRAIN STATION | Florence’s Santa Maria Novella train station, also designed by Michelucci, similarly provides sanctuary to a diverse group of people. A hybrid drawing explores the potential for sacred spaces hovering above the platforms. Additionally, a series of linocut prints synthesize elements of old and new spaces in Florence.
